An aristocrat of the Bhonsle Maratha Dynasty, Shivaji, carved an enclave from Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. That formed the genesis of an independent Maratha kingdom with Raigad as its capital. Shivaji was crowned as king on 6th June 1674.


Shivaji established a competent and progressive kingdom with the help of a disciplined military and well-structured administrative organisations. He innovated military tactics to help his army and pioneering the guerilla warfare methods (Shiva sutra or ganimi kava), which leveraged the prominent strategic factors like geography, speed, and surprise and focused pinpoint attacks to defeat his larger and more powerful enemies. From a small contingent of 2,000 soldiers which he had inherited from his father, Shivaji had created a force of 100,000 soldiers; he built and restored few strategically located forts both inland and coastal to safeguard his kingdom. He revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions, and promoted the usage of local languages like Marathi and Sanskrit, in place of Persian, in his court and administration.

Shivaji was born on April 1627 and his parents were Father Shahaji Bhonsle and Mother Jijabai a very brave female. He had 2 sons Sambhaji and Rajaram. and 4 daughters Sakhubai Nimbalkar, Ranubai Jadhav, Ambikabai Mahadik and Rajkumaribai Shirke. Sambhaji was his Successor.

Shivaji was a great brave king, who fought for independence of Indian and saved Hinduism. His rule left many valuable legacy for many generation to come. He died on 3 April 1680 in  Raigad Fort, Pune, India.
