The Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development has started a scheme to help reduce the number of female student dropouts from schools and universities by sanctioning Scholarships. This scholarship is only available for students who are the only girl child in her immediate family. Proof is also required for this scholarship. This scholarship will compensate for all educational costs especially at higher education level.

There is an introductory fee to single girl child from 6th standard to 12th standard. If the female students successfully complete an undergraduate programme, she will be rewarded with a scholarship for higher education as well. Such scholarships will be sanctioned by the University Grants Commission.


Undergraduate courses

Undergraduate students will be awarded with scholarship only after they have completed class 10 board exams under the CBSE boards. The money given will be used to cover the expenses of class 11 and 12th. This scholarship can also be used for degree courses selected by the students, whether the courses are professional or not.
The head of the college (dean or principle) must certify the students who wishes to apply for scholarship is regular to class and is disciplined with good conduct. Also the parents of the candidate must swear before the Judicial Magistrate/ Executive Magistrate stating that she is the only daughter and child in the family, and that they do not have any other children.

Scholarship Amount
The amount differs, depending on which course the student selects. For high school students the scholarships amount is RS 500, every month.  Undergraduate courses are RS 550 per month. And for professional courses selected by AIPMT/AIEEE, the scholarships amounts is RS 1000 per month, all four years.

Number of scholarships awarded for class 11 and 12 students is unlimited, but the number is limited to 550 for undergraduate courses, for medicine it is 150 and for technical courses it is 350.

The scholarship money is directly deposited in the student’s bank account, as already mentioned in the application form.

Postgraduate courses

Scholarships that are available for female students (single) can be non- professional, postgraduate courses only. They are awarded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The applicant’s age should not be more than 30 years of age during the time of admission.

Scholarship amount is Rs 2000 a month and that is payable for 2 years (10 months per year). But to apply for this, the candidate must state that she is the only girl child in her immediate family. Number of scholarships available is 1200 per year, and it is applicable to regular students only and not external candidates.

This scholarship is in honour of the first lady prime minister on India, Indira Gandhi as she was the only girl child in her family. Applications for this scholarship are available in the month of August/ September. For more information visit University Grant Commission site.
