Oil & Gas in South India

Krishna-Godavari Basin in south India is a peri-cratonic passive margin basin in India. It is spread across over 50,000 square kilometres in the Krishna River and Godavari River basins in Andhra Pradesh. This site also known for the D-6 block and Reliance Industries pioneered the biggest natural gas reserves in India in 2002.


The first step of gas discovery in the basin was taken by ONGC in 1983, in Rajole Well No.1, with a small office in cities of Rajahmundry and Narsapur in A. P.  After that discovery Reliance and others companies have joined the exploration.

Reliance Industries projects 14 trillion cubic feet of gas 6000 feet below the sea floor in KG-DWN-98/l (KG-D6) in 2006.
Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation in June 2005 reports 20 trillion cubic feet (5.7×1011 m3)cubic feet of gas.
Potentially 20 trillion cubic feet (5.7×1011 m3) of gas may be explore in D-3 and D-9 blocks, according to estimation of May 2011.
Another gas discovery by ONGC in June 2009, have an estimated 10 trillion cubic feet (2.8×1011 m3

The project KG-DWN-98/1 (KG-D6) of 8100sq km. is expected to cost $100 billion. which is 50 km off the Kakinada  coast.
The KG Basin is home to a Vulnerable species of Olive Ridley turtles.
